Spurs release Woodgate

Tottenham have confirmed defender Jonathan Woodgate will not be offered a new contract.

Reports had suggested that the club were willing to offer the 31-year-old a pay-as-you-play deal but that failed to materialise leaving Woodgate free to find a new club this summer.

He made just 49 Premier League starts during his three-and-a-half year stint at the club with his crowning acheivement coming against Chelsea in the 2008 Carling Cup final where he scored the winning goal.

However, 31 minutes of first team football in 16 months have convinced Spurs that his future lies elsewhere.
