Modric to sit out United fixture

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Luka Modric will play no part in tonight's fixture against Manchester United.

Modric has been linked with a move to Chelsea all summer and despite chairman Daniel Levy's insistance that the 25-year-old will not be sold, speculation is still rife that he will leave Spurs by the close of the transfer window.

Redknapp confessed last week that the club could cash in on the Croatian so he could re-invest back into the squad with Brad Friedel the only senior player to have joined thus far.

The diminutive playmaker sat out the 5-0 midweek win over Hearts due to injury and was expected to recover in time to face United tonight but Redknapp now admits that the player's head is not in the right place and will not be travelling to Old Trafford.

"He's got a little bit of an injury," said Redknapp.

"There's a possibility he could have played through it.

"But at the moment his head's not in the right place."

Meanwhile, Spurs winger Gareth Bale insists the clun cannot dwell on Modric's potential departure from White Hart Lane while praising the strength in depth currently available to Redknapp following the 5-0 over Hearts.

"Luka is a fantastic player. I'm not sure what the situation is with him but I think if he is here then he's great for the team but if he's not then we have to get on without him," Bale said.

"Luka and JJ (Jenas) didn't play (in the 5-0 win) so it gives confidence to the whole squad that we can play like that.

"These players that came in are international players and they showed that they are all class. It shows what kind of squad we have got."
