Final Modric bid rejected

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that Chelsea came in with an offer of £40m for Luka Modric on Tuesday.

Modric has been pining for a move away from White Hart Lane for a majority of the summer and has been hankering for a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues saw two bids of £22m and £27m rejected during the transfer window and were widely expected to return with a renewed offer of anything upwards of £30m.

Chairman Daniel Levy issued a statement at the beginning of the summer claiming the Croatian was not for sale at any price and Redknapp has confirmed that the midfielder will not be leaving White Hart Lane in the distant future.

"The chairman stood firm over Luka," he told Sky Sports News.

"I think £40million was apparently offered yesterday. Whether that is true or not, it is what I heard.

"It is a big offer to turn down, that's for sure. I am delighted the little man is still here and hopefully he will have a great season for us."

Redknapp also believes the international break will be good for the 25-year-old, a break which the Spurs manager believes will allow Modric to get his head straight.

"Yeah, for sure. He has got two international games this week. There's good competition.

"Sandro is getting fit, Scott Parker has arrived, Tom Huddlestone. We've got good players in the middle of the park so we're looking forward to it now."

Chelsea eventually made the late signing of Raul Meireles from Liverpool for £11.5m
